Discrimination By Businesses
It is illegal for businesses -- stores, restaurants, hotels, theaters, stadiums, medical practices, private service agencies -- to discriminate on the basis of disability, race, religion, or national origin. This includes:
- Physical barriers to people who use wheelchairs, for example, entrances blocked by steps; "form one line" barriers that block access to counters; theaters or arenas with inaccessible or inadequate seating and seating policies.
- Communications barriers to individuals who are deaf or blind, for example, refusal to provide sign-language interpreters or Braille or large-type materials; or failure to provide assistive-listening devices.
- Discrimination on the basis of race, religion or national origin , for example, refusing service to individuals of a given group, refusing to take checks from such individuals while taking them from those in majority groups, segregating individuals of a given group.
- Discrimination in contractual relations on the basis of race , for example, in franchising, commercial real estate, and other commercial transactions.
These are just some of the examples of illegal discrimination. If you believe that a business has discriminated against you, you may contact us to evaluate your case.
